A belated “hurrah, hurrah” for Saint George, the patron saint of England! No matter how far you may be from your home town, you should always be near a hearty meal that reminds you of home sweet home. And today that means that we will be listing some of Dubai’s best spots to indulge in English delights, such as a full English breakfast, bangers and mash or a Sunday roast (on a Saturday, of course).
English cuisine may have received a dig or two over the years, but Dubai’s phenomenal pubs, gastropubs and bistros prove that it is in fact full of flavour, substance and always paired with outstanding hospitality!
Tucked away inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road, Harvester’s is a true English gem that offers both indoors and outdoors seating. Guests can enjoy a selection of hearty soups, classic fish and chips and typically British curries (i.e., not quite as spicy as Ravi’s) and much more, along with an ample offer of hops. Numerous TV screens throughout this charming venue show every sporting event you can imagine. Pop in on a Tuesday to avail their offer of one main dish with a glass of hop for just AED 75!
Once you’ve found this place, you’re bound to return, again and again. To start, the location is one of a kind for Dubai, perched on the banks of a lake next to The Lakes club house. Secondly, there isn’t anything Reform doesn’t offer. In addition to their traditional breakfast, afternoon tea and pub grub dinners, the venue often hosts themed events, such as the recent spring fest and BBQ evening. A top choice for your next birthday dinner or for a catch up with friends over bacon sandwiches and tea.
A popular favourite amongst Dubai’s seasoned expat community, Dhow & Anchor is a modern gastropub with a large terrace for the cooler months and unforgettable views of the Burj al Arab. In addition to a refreshingly contemporary menu of British cuisine, this eatery also plays host to a much loved pub quiz every Tuesday that gives your brain cells a good bit of exercise at the chance of winning fun prizes. What more? Every Wednesday, ladies enjoy some free-flowing bubbles for ladies’ night.
We adore Amwaj Rotana for its unbeatable location with gorgeous views of the sea and The Palm. And we have equally fallen in love their stylishly decorated gastropub – JB’s. All though this modern pub also serves up some classics from across the Atlantic, we feel that their top notch British dishes qualify them for the list. Some fun things to order off their menu include their sausage by the meter, sharing platters and smoked meats. They also have a great selection of grapes and hops. For the sports enthusiast there are several screens showing the latest games.
This urban bistro on The Palm is sure to score some sports fans, and a few foodies along the way too with its modern twist on classic favourites. If you want to get away from the sports commentary and simply enjoy your pan roasted lamb rump and pitcher of Pimm’s in peace, head to their terrace for a spot of boat watching.
We hope you’ll find your pick amongst these true English gems, and do let us know your thoughts by posting a comment on Facebook! We’ll be back again next week with more tips of what to try around the city.
