In recent years, yoga has gained a lot of popularity in the fast-paced city that we live in. Dubai has numerous yoga classes that are evenly spread within the city: There are gyms, private instructors and yoga studios all competing directly for their share of experienced yogis and wannabe bendy newbies.
With the upcoming XYoga Dubai happening this weekend and YogaFest the weekend after, we thought we’d take a deep breath and share our pick of the best spots to develop your practice:
Friends of Yoga offer open-air and FREE yoga sessions that are conducted within the city in the mornings and evenings. The group was founded by Madhavan in the ‘90s and has a current membership of more than 25,000. Sessions are mainly conducted by volunteer teachers and have a strong focus on meditation breathing. Classes are located all over the city from Zabeel and Deira to The Gardens, and International City.
Club Stretch offers bikram yoga for those who are looking for a serious workout. It is designed to exercise all the muscles in the body in order to promote flexibility and weight loss, build core strength, and minimize ageing effects. It is practiced in temperatures of up to 400C, with the heat meant to warm muscles, flush out toxins, and enhance blood circulation. Classes happen daily from 7am to 9pm.
This form of yoga combines the best of pilates and yoga. Classes are conducted by legendary pilates and yoga teacher, Noura El-Imam. Classes are small but focused with each pose designed to be as relaxing or challenging as intended. Sessions are conducted at the Fraser Suites on the outdoor pool terrace every Monday and Wednesday at 7.15pm.
If you are looking for a truly serene experience, head to Madinat Jumeirah for classes which happen at dusk. Classical music plays in the background as the yoga takes place outdoors at sunset. Once a month, the spa hosts a full moon yoga session on the beach, listening to the sound of the waves.
This remains one of the most established and longest running yoga classes in Dubai, located in the BBC building in Dubai Media City. They also boast some of the most experienced teachers in the business. You can choose from a wide variety of classes including the awesome Vinyasa classes which come highly recommended.
These yoga classes held at the Surf House are mostly meant for surfers. Participants are able to build core strength and flexibility in a bid to complement paddle boarding, surfing and other water sports.
Now go get limber and stretched…
